EFL Cup - Southampton v Liverpool - Preview

The EFL Cup continues today with the semi-final first leg match between Southampton and Liverpool. Both teams drew last weekend in the FA Cup. Southampton drew 2-2 away at Norwich. Liverpool drew 0-0 at home against Plymouth.

Southampton are currently on a four-match run without a win in all competitions (one draw and three defeats). Their last win was a 3-1 away win against Bournemouth in the Premier League. Liverpool are currently on a seven-match unbeaten run in all competitions (four wins and three draws), and a three-match unbeaten away run (two wins and one draw). The last team to win a home match against Liverpool were Bournemouth. They won 4-3 in the Premier League last December.

Both teams have been in good goal scoring form recently. Both teams have scored seven goals in their last five matches in all competitions. In terms of goals conceded, Southampton have conceded 12 goals in their last five matches. Liverpool have conceded three goals in their last five matches in all competitions.

The last match between Southampton and Liverpool was a 0-0 draw in the Premier League last November. Southampton’s last win against Liverpool was a 3-2 home win in the Premier League last March. Liverpool’s last win against Southampton was a 6-1 away win in the EFL Cup back in 2015. Today’s match between Southampton and Liverpool is scheduled to start at 19:45 Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).

My Prediction: Southampton 1-2 Liverpool.

Manchester United won the first match at home 5-0. They won 1-0 away at Hull in the second match. Hull’s last win against Manchester United was a 2-0 away win in the FA Cup back in 1952.
