Tonight, this weekend and next Monday night will see all 20 teams that are participating in this season’s English Premier League (EPL) in action in the third round of the FA Cup. The third round of the FA Cup this season will only see two all-EPL ties. The first takes place tomorrow afternoon, between Newcastle and Blackburn. The other tie takes place on Sunday afternoon, between Manchester City and Manchester United.

The most eye-catching third round tie involving an EPL club is the one that will be taking place tomorrow afternoon at Goodison Park. EPL side Everton will be taking on conference side Tamworth. Tamworth go into the tie tomorrow’s tie off the back of a 5-match winless run in all competitions. Everton’s form has not been that great either recently. They have only won two of their last six matches in the EPL.

Liverpool v Oldham: A mini-match preview

Tomorrow night sees Premier League side Liverpool take on League One side Oldham in the third round of this season’s FA Cup.

Both sides go into tomorrow night’s match off the back of contrasting results in their respective leagues. Liverpool lost 3-0 away at Manchester City in the Premier League, while Oldham drew 1-1 away at Chesterfield in League One.

It will be the first ever meeting between the two sides in a domestic cup competition. The last time that both clubs met at Anfield was in a Premier League match back in 1993. On that occasion Liverpool won 2-1, thanks to goals from Robbie Fowler and an own goal from Oldham defender Andy Barlow.

This year has seen some amazing goals being scored in competitions from around the world. They range from Wayne Rooney’s overhead kick for Manchester United against Manchester City in the English Premier League, to Neymar’s solo effort for Santos against Flamengo in the Campeonato Brasileiro in Brazil.

However my favourite goal of 2011 has to be Jonathan Fabbro’s free kick for Paraguayan side Cerro Porteno against Chile’s Colo Colo in this year’s Copa Libertadores:

What was so good about this goal from Fabbro was that it came late on in the match, and meant that it was Cerro Porteno and not Colo Colo that qualified for the knock out stages of this year’s Copa Libertadores.

Newcastle’s bad EPL record at Anfield

This evening, Newcastle travel to Anfield to take on Liverpool in the English Premier League (EPL).

Both sides go into the match off the back of contrasting Boxing Day results. Liverpool had to come from behind to draw 1-1 at home to Blackburn, while Newcastle in contrast won 2-0 away at Bolton. Both sides are currently in the top half of the table. Liverpool against Newcastle has been a fixture at Anfield in the EPL that has not been kind to the visitors.

Newcastle has not won at Anfield against Liverpool in the EPL for over 17 years. Their last and only win came in 1994, when they won 2-0 against Liverpool at Anfield. Universidad de Chile: 2011 Copa Sudamaricana Champions!

This week saw Chilean club Universidad de Chile win their first major international trophy. They won this year’s Copa Sudamaricana, defeating Ecuador’s LDU Quito 4-0 on aggregate in the final. They are the first Chilean club to win a South American club competition, since Colo Colo’s Copa Libertadores triumph in 1991.

At the heart of Universidad’s success has been their rock-solid defence. They managed to keep 10 clean sheets out of the 12 matches that they played in this year’s competition. They only conceded two goals as well, an incredible achievement given the opposition that they were drawn against. The opposition that they were up against include Flamengo and Vasco da Gama, two clubs that will be representing Brazil in next year’s Copa Libertadores.

Chelsea’s Champions League record in Italy

Yesterday Chelsea was drawn against Italian side Napoli in the last sixteen stage of this season’s UEFA Champions League competition. Both sides meet in Italy on the 21st February 2012, with the return leg at Stamford Bridge taking place on the 14th March 2012.

Chelsea does not have a good record in Italy in the Champions League. They have only won once on their six visits to Italy in the competition. That was against Lazio back in 2003, during the 2003/2004 season. The scorers for Chelsea that day in Rome were Hernan Crespo, Eidur Gudjohnsen, Damien Duff, and Frank Lampard.

Since that result Chelsea have lost two and drawn one in Italy, conceding seven goals in the process. Here is Chelsea’s Champions League record in Italy in full:

Godoy Cruz advance in the Copa Sudamericana

Argentinean club side Godoy Cruz progressed to the round of sixteen stage of this year’s Copa Sudamericana last night, thanks to a goalless second leg draw at home to fellow Argentinean club side Lanus.

The first leg between Godoy Cruz and Lanus finished 2-2 last Thursday. Lanus took the lead in that match, through a goal from midfielder Diego Gonzalez. Godoy Cruz responded with goals from defender German Voboril and striker Alvaro Navarro. Lanus got a late equaliser in that match, thanks to a goal from striker Juan Neira.

The return match in Mendoza last night was a lively affair, with both sides having a number of chances to win the match. The best chance of the match came in the first half, when Lanus striker Mariano Pavone had an effort inside the Godoy Cruz six-yard box that struck the crossbar.

Alcobendas v Lanzarote: A Match Preview

This season’s Copa del Rey competition begins this evening, with eighteen first round ties taking place across Spain. Among the clubs that will be involved in tonight’s Copa del Rey action, will be Alcobendas Sport and Lanzarote. Both sides will be going head-to-head with each other at the Estadio Jose Caballero in Alcobendas.

Alcobendas Sport and Lanzarote currently play their league football in the Tercera Division, Spain’s fourth level of league football. It is a division that is split into eighteen groups, based on the different regions in Spain. Alcobendas Sport are in Tercera Division group seven, while Lanzarote are in Tercera Division group twelve. Both sides had contrasting results last weekend.

Alcobendas Sport won 5-0 at home to Atletico Pinto, while Lanzarote drew 1-1 away at UD Las Palmas B. Both matches took place last Saturday. Ajax off to a flying start in Holland

Ajax Amsterdam began their defence of the Eredivisie title yesterday, with a comfortable 4-1 away win at De Graafschap in Doetinchem. Ajax won thanks to two goals from Miralem Sulejmani, and one each from Derk Boerrigter and Theo Janssen.

Ajax have now won their last seven matches in a row in the Eredivisie. The last team to beat Ajax in the Eredivisie was ADO Den Haag (3-2) back in March. Listed below are the results in Ajax’s current winning run in the Eredivisie:

The key to Ajax’s current winning run in the Eredivisie has been their goal scoring abilities. In their current winning run they have scored twenty goals, with nine of them coming from strikers Miralem Sulejmani (five goals), and Siem de Jong (four goals).

Despite being in very good form going forward at the moment, Ajax’s defence has not been as strong. They have only managed to keep two clean sheets in their current winning run in the Eredivisie. Those two clean sheets came against Heracles (3-0) and Groningen (2-0) back in April.

Next up for Ajax in the Eredivisie is a home match on Sunday against Heerenveen.

Manchester United win 19th Community Shield

Second half goals from Chris Smalling and Nani saw Manchester United come back from 2-0 down to defeat rivals Manchester City 3-2, in yesterday’s Community Shield match at Wembley. Nani scored two goals for Manchester United in the match. Manchester City had taken a 2-0 lead in the first half, through Joleon Lescott and Edin Džeko.

A drawing start to the 2011 Copa Sudamericana

The 2011 edition of the Copa Sudamericana began last night, with two score draws. Uruguay’s Bella Vista and Chile’s Universidad Católica draw 1-1 in Montevideo (Uruguay), while Peru’s Universidad César Vallejo drew 1-1 with Colombia’s Santa Fe in Trujillo (Peru).

Bella Vista 1-1 Universidad Católica

In Uruguay Bella Vista drew 1-1 with Universidad Católica. Bella Vista took the lead on twenty-three minutes, through a Ignacio Nicolini penalty. On thirty-five minutes Universidad Católica were level, thanks to a clever headed goal by Pablo Calandria inside the Bella Vista penalty area.

Universidad César Vallejo 1-1 Santa Fe

In Peru Universidad César Vallejo drew 1-1 with Santa Fe. Like the game in Montevideo it was the home side (Universidad César Vallejo) that opened the scoring. They took the lead on four minutes, when a free kick from Mario Leguizamón was spilled by Santa Fe goal keeper Agustín Julio.

On fifty-one minutes Santa Fe were level, thanks to a left-footed strike from Óscar Rodas inside the Universidad César Vallejo penalty area. The goal by Óscar Rodas was Santa Fe’s first ever away goal in the Copa Sudamericana.

Bella Vista v Universidad Católica: Match Preview

The 2011 Copa Sudamericana begins this evening, with a first round first leg match-up between Uruguay’s Bella Vista, and Chile’s Universidad Católica in Montevideo (Uruguay).

Bella Vista qualified for this year’s tournament, by finishing fifth overall in the Uruguayan Primera División last season. Universidad Católica qualified for this year’s tournament, by winning this year’s Chilean Apertura Championship.

Both clubs go into tonight’s match in contrasting form.

Bella Vista have gone five matches without a win in all competitions, drawing three and losing two in the process. They have not won a competitive match, since winning 1-0 at home to Racing Club in the Clausura Championship stage of the Primera División back in April.

One reason why Bella Vista have struggled of late in competitive matches has been their defence. In their last five matches they have conceded six goals. They conceded two goals against Fénix back in May, and two against the Uruguayan River Plate the following month.

In contrast Universidad Católica go into the match against Bella Vista in very good form. They are currently seven-match unbeaten run in all competitions. Out of those seven matches they have won five of them, scoring thirteen goals in the process.

Last weekend Universidad Católica won 4-1 at home to Deportes Iquique in their opening match in the Clausura Championship stage of the Chilean Primera División. They won that match thanks to goals from César Carignano, Fernando Meneses, and Pablo Calandria. Fernando Meneses scored two goals in that match for Universidad Católica.

Tonight’s meeting between both clubs will be only the third time that they will have met in South American club competitions. They previously met in a round of sixteen tie in the 1999 edition of the Copa Libertadores. Bella Vista came out on top in that tie, winning 5-3 on aggregate.

The match between Bella Vista and Universidad Católica this evening will be taking place at the Estadio José Nasazzi in Montevideo. The match will kick off at 23:45 Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).

2011-2012 CONCACAF Champions League: Looking Ahead #1

This coming week will see the conclusion of the preliminary round, in this season CONCACAF Champions League. It will involve clubs from Canada, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Puerto Rico, and the United States (US). There are two matches in particular that will be worth keeping an eye on.

The first is the one on Thursday between the US’s Seattle Sounders and Panama’s San Francisco. Seattle Sounders go into the match not only a goal down in the tie, but also in very bad form. They have lost their last three matches in all competitions, one of which was a 7-0 hammering by English Premier League champions Manchester United in a friendly match in Seattle last month.

San Francisco in contrast go into their match in Seattle in really good form. They have won their last ten matches in all competitions, scoring eighteen goals in the process. At the heart of San Francisco’s great form recently has been strikers Boris Alfaro and Roberto Brown. Both players have scored five goals each in San Francisco’s current winning run.

The second match worth keeping an eye on this week is the one on Wednesday between Nicaragua’s Real Estelí, and Canada’s Toronto FC. The Canadian side travel to Nicaragua with a slender 2-1 lead that they achieved in the first leg. Toronto would have been in an even better position in this tie, had they not conceded a late goal in Canada last week.

It is going to be a tough match for Toronto in Nicaragua on Wednesday. They don’t have the best of away records in the competition. Last season they failed to register a win in any of their away matches in the competition. They draw 2-2 away at Motagua in the preliminary round. During the group stage they lost 1-0 away at Panama’s Árabe Unido, 4-1 away at US’s Real Salt Lake; and 0-0 away at Mexico’s Cruz Azul.

The match for Real Estelí on Wednesday against Toronto will be their second-ever home match in the competition. Their last home match took place in 2008, and was against Canadian opposition. They drew 0-0 with Montreal Impact in the preliminary round.

Peru v Venezuela: A Mini-match Preview

Tomorrow night sees Peru and Venezuela go head-to-head in La Plata (Argentina), to decide who finishes third in this year’s edition of the Copa America.

Both countries go into tomorrow night’s match off the back of contrasting defeats in the semi-finals. Peru were beaten 2-0 in normal time by Uruguay, while Venezuela were beaten 5-3 on penalties by Paraguay. The match between Venezuela and Paraguay finished 0-0 after extra time.

The match between Peru and Venezuela tomorrow night will be only the sixth time that both countries will have come up against each other in the Copa America. The first meeting the two countries came back in 1989, during the group stage.

The first meeting between Peru and Venezuela finished 1-1 in Salvador (Brazil). Venezuela took the lead in that match on twenty-nine minutes, through midfielder Carlos Maldonado. Peru equalised a minute later through striker Franco Navarro. Both countries were eliminated at the group stage in that edition of the Copa America.

Since that meeting in Salvador in 1989 Peru and Venezuela have meet on four other occasions in the Copa America. They met in 1991, 1997, 2004, and 2007. Peru won the 1991 (5-1), 1997 (2-0) and 2004 (3-1) encounters, while Venezuela won the 2007 encounter 2-0.

HJK KO Bangor

Finnish champions HJK Helsinki qualified for the third qualifying round of this season’s UEFA Champions League; thanks to a 10-0 home win over Welsh champions Bangor City.

HJK went into the match off the back of a 3-0 home win over VPS Vaasa last weekend in the Finnish Veikkausliiga. Bangor in contrast did not play a competitive match last weekend. Their last competitive match was a home match against HJK in the Champions League last Wednesday, which they lost 3-0 in Wales.

HJK opened the scoring on thirty-seven minutes, through Finnish international midfielder Alexander Ring. It was 2-0 to HJK seven minutes later, when Macedonian born Finnish international striker Berat Sadik got on the score sheet.

The third goal for HJK came two minutes into the second half, courtesy of Kosovan born Finnish midfielder Erfan Zeneli. Five minutes later Brazilian midfielder Rafinha got on the score sheet to make it 4-0 to HJK.

Two minutes later Erfan Zeneli scored his second of the match, and HJK’s fifth goal of the evening. At that stage of the match HJK were 8-0 up on aggregate against Bangor, with thirty-six minutes of the match to go in Helsinki.

The next goal (goal number six) of the game for HJK came on sixty-four minutes, through Finnish international striker Teemu Pukki. Two minutes later Kastriot Kastrati got on the score sheet to make it 7-0 to HJK. A minute later Teemu Pukki got on the score sheet again to make it 8-0 to HJK.

Goal number nine for HJK came on seventy-one minutes, through former under-17 Finnish international striker Jarno Parikka. The final goal of the game and the tie came on eighty-eight minutes, through Kastriot Kastrati’s second goal of the match.

HJK will play Croatian champions Dinamo Zagreb in the next qualifying round, with the winners qualifying for the play-off round. The first leg of the tie will take place in Helsinki next Wednesday (27th July), with the return match in Zagreb taking place on Wednesday 3rd August.

AGF Aarhus v Lyngby Boldklub: Mini-match Preview

Newly promoted AGF Aarhus get their Danish Superliga campaign underway this evening, with a home match against Lyngby Boldklub in Århus.

Last season AGF Aarhus won the Danish First Division by eleven points. Lyngby Boldklub in contrast finished eighth in the Danish Superliga, just four points clear of the relegation zone.

The meeting between AGF Aarhus and Lyngby Boldklub this evening will be their first encounter in the Danish Superliga, since the 2007/2008 season. The last league meeting between the two sides took place in Århus back in April 2008.

AGF Aarhus won the match 3-1, thanks to goals from Jerry Lucena, Dioh Williams, and Jeremiah White. Christian Holst scored the consolation goal for Lyngby Boldklub. AGF Aarhus finished tenth in the Danish Superliga season, while Lyngby Boldklub finished bottom of the table (12th).

Colombia v Peru: A Historical Preview

The knockout stages of this year’s edition of the Copa America begins this evening, with a quarter-final match-up between Colombia and Peru in the Argentinean city of Córdoba. Both countries go into the match off the back of contrasting results in their final respective group stage matches.

Colombia won 2-0 in their final group match against Bolivia last Sunday, while Peru lost 1-0 against Chile in their final group match on Tuesday. Both results meant that Colombia finished as winners of Group A, while Peru finished third in Group C (behind Chile and Uruguay).

Colombia against Peru is a Copa America fixture that has largely been in favour of the Peruvians. Peru have won six matches against Colombia, which includes a 5-1 win over the Colombians in the 1947 edition of the competition. Colombia in contrast have only won two matches against Peru in the Copa America. The first came in 1975 (1-0 in Bagota). The second came in 2001 (3-0 in Armenia).

Despite their early dominance in the fixture, Peru have not won a match against Colombia in the competition for over twenty-seven years. The last time that Peru beat Colombia in the competition came back in 1983, in a group stage match that took place in Peru. Peru won that match 1-0, and went on to reach the semi-finals that year.

The path to El Monumental clearer

The quarter-final line-up for this year’s Copa America was completed last night. It was completed with the qualification of Brazil, Paraguay and Venezuela from Group B. All three countries join Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Peru, and Uruguay in the knockout stages.

Out of the eight countries that remain, there are two that have never won the Copa America. They are Chile and Venezuela. Chile have been runners-up four times in the competition (1955, 1956, 1979, and 1987).

Venezuela have never reached a Copa America final. Their best run in the competition came in 2007, when they reached the quarter-finals. Venezuela met Uruguay in San Cristóbal, and were beaten 4-1. The 2007 edition of the Copa America was held in Venezuela.

The other six countries (Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Paraguay, Peru, and Uruguay) have previously won the competition before. Argentina and Uruguay have both won the competition fourteen times each, Brazil eight times, Paraguay and Peru two times each; and Colombia once.

Duque still without a win in Serie B

Duque de Caxias’s winless start to the Serie B season continued last night, as they lost 3-2 at home to Grêmio Barueri. Duque took the lead on 16 minutes, through former Fluminense midfielder Leandro Teixeira. On 27 minutes Grêmio Barueri were level, thanks to a goal from veteran defender Junior Guerreiro.

Grêmio Barueri took the lead on 57 minutes, through midfielder Alex Maranhão. Duque were level six minutes later, when striker Somália got on the score sheet with his sixth goal of the Serie B campaign. Somália is currently third in the goal scoring charts, three behind Ponte Preta's Ricardo Jesus. The final goal of the match came on 85 minutes, when Grêmio Barueri substitute Val Baiano scored to make it 3-2 to the visitors.

The win for Grêmio Barueri last night sees them climb up to ninth in the table, four points off fourth place Americana. The defeat for Duque sees them remain bottom of the Serie B table, without a win, and seven points off safety.

In the other match that took place last night Criciúma won 2-0 against Goiás. Criciúma took the lead on 80 minutes, through former Cruzeiro and Gamba Osaka striker Ze Carlos. Criciúma secured all three points five minutes later, when Ze Carlos scored his second of the match, and his third of the Serie B campaign. Both goals by Ze Carlos were scored inside the Goiás penalty area.

The win for Criciúma last night took them up to fifth in the table, level on points with Portuguesa (2nd), Paraná (3rd), and Americana (4th). Those three teams though however have played a game less than Criciúma.

The defeat for Goiás saw them drop to 15th in the table, level on points with Salgueiro (16th), Guarani (17th), Icasa (18th), and Bragantino (19th). Those five teams though however have played a game less than Goiás.

The Asian qualifying path to Brazil continues #1

Last weekend saw Bangladesh, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Palestine, Philippines, and Vietnam all make it through to the second round of Asian qualifiers, for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. They will be joined by twenty other countries, who automatically qualified for the second round. They include China and Iran, two sides that have previously qualified for the world cup.
